Speed only counts for movement, not in battle. All units will move at the same rate as the slowest unit. Dont think there's any units with a speed other than 20 so it may be there, but not doing anything yet until they change them.
From my experience, it seems that the attack and defense of the units plays a big factor here.
I had a battle where the defender had a higher defense value than my own units, but their attack power wasn't as high.

I wasnt expecting that much resistance. He had more defense than my offense, but I still won. I think that was partly because I had a cook with me, and also I had higher offense than his offense especially after bashing his walls down, and had superior defense. 464 defense, vs his 447, and 396 attack power vs his 249. He just didnt have the damage to kill my soliders fast, but had good enough defense to hold out for a while. Once my attack power surpassed his defenses, his units dropped like a brick. Oh yeah, my cook died in the 4th round
Having good defense and reasonable attack power is important when defending otherwise an opponent with good defense can still win. As for attacking, good defense is important, but superior offense power will lead the way.
